Monday afternoon in Sidmouth everyone on the promenade was watching this man and his horse, doing some sort of training - up and down along the same stretch of beach with a long pole and then galloping in and out of the waves...sometimes accompanied by dogs and surfers......but somehow he made it look like it was just him and the horse alone - fluid with his ownership of the sea and the sand.
It was a relief to cut into tonight's cake after the birthday girl blew out the candles. It was cooked all the way through - moist and light - unlike last week's 'cakeless' carrot cake - which was raw in the middle, although that birthday girl was still very complimentary about it.
As so many of us are being gluten and dairy and sugar free I adapted this recipe from Nigella Lawson's Chocolate Olive Oil Cake which is just eggs and almonds, cocoa powder olive oil and sugar - I used coconut sugar which doesn't really count as no sugar - and iced it with My New Roots Chocolate Date Frosting.
The heart and butterfly decorations are pure sugar of course - but then I find life is just not worth living without a little sweetness now and then....hard to ignore its addictive qualities though.... but not something I'm going to take on right now as my plate is already full with the sharp and the sour.
Thank goodness then my cup is full to overflowing with love.
