Playing Hooky

Just got back from the Ballet at The Royal Opera House....or rather a live performance screened from the ROH in London
at the  wonderful Radway Cinema in Sidmouth, Devon.

It was a birthday treat from a friend - supper at her's first - a huge bowl of pasta dressed in a Sicilian pistachio pesto with Romanesco cauliflower and courgettes - and then the treat of Kenneth Macmillan's Manon  - music by Jules Massenet. I'd never heard of it - first performed 40 years ago -  a tragic love story ending in death all round - spellbinding ....beautiful streamlined bodies in tights and floaty gossamer dresses being tossed around the stage..... all reds and russets and golds and bronzes.....  moody sets in Paris - courtyards and attic rooms ...a party in a  hotel and finally a prison ....electric chemistry between the two lead dancers....I did worry about her feet though - all that pressure on her toes...( in the programme it said every season the Royal Ballet dancers use 12,000 pairs of shoes.)

I wouldn't have missed it for anything - felt a bit like a playing hooky....loved it....
