La Boheme and The Pear

Budleigh Salterton the other afternoon.

Just got back from a night out -treated by my cousin's husband. She has Alzheimer's disease. She's only 68. In the later stages of it now.  He looks after her at home. We went to La Boheme performed by The Swansea City Opera at the Octagon in Yeovil. I really only know the famous aria "Your tiny hand is frozen" but  I still  cried through most of the last half.

We shared carer stories on the way home in the car. He said the hardest thing is losing your life companion. Caring for the person you didn't marry. Even though they are in there somewhere - it's hard to find them  - like a pear that looks perfect on the outside but has gone rotten on the inside.

When I got home there was a note from the carer who came to look after Robin who said they had a short drive, he had the supper I left but refused a shower and wanted to go to bed. Where he is now. Unwashed but safe. Which is all that matters tonight.
